Bulleit 95 Rye Review

By Whisky Veteran •  Updated: 07/20/25 •  2 min read

Before Bulleit was slinging bourbon all over the map, they were laying groundwork for one of the boldest rye whiskeys in the game. Bulleit 95 Rye was launched in 2011 and helped kick off the rye resurgence we’re seeing today. Distilled in Indiana (likely MGP), it brings serious heat and classic rye character to the table—without torching your wallet. It’s become a go-to for bartenders, rookies, and grizzled whiskey vets alike.

Mission Briefing

Recon Notes (Nose)

First whiff hits you like a drill sergeant on Monday morning—sharp and spicy. Think cracked black pepper, dill, and baking spice, with a touch of citrus peel and green apple in the background. There’s some faint vanilla and charred oak if you stay in formation long enough, but overall this nose says, “We’re here to work, not whisper sweet nothings.”

Frontline Flavor (Palate)

Spice takes point, just as any proper rye should. You get a bold wave of cinnamon, clove, and peppercorn, followed by earthy grains and a touch of honey. Mid-palate brings a little mint and light oak—like a brisk walk through a field in fall. It’s direct, assertive, and keeps your attention without going rogue. Definitely not a “soft serve” kind of whiskey. This pour’s got discipline.

After Action (Finish)

Medium to long finish that doesn’t ghost you. The spice lingers like that one guy in your squad who always had a story to tell after lights out. There’s a trace of dry oak and rye grain as it fades, but nothing too bitter or abrupt. Clean exit, no casualties.

Debrief

Bulleit 95 Rye earns its stripes. It’s a spicy, no-nonsense rye that over-delivers for the price. While it won’t outgun some of the more elite small-batch ryes on the market, it holds the line with reliability and grit. Whether you’re mixing up a Manhattan or sipping it neat by the fire pit, this bottle’s got your six. Plus, at around $30, you won’t need to call in a supply drop to re-up.
